Dat's Friends

On Saturday we meet up with Dat's friends in Hanoi. Dat is my flatmate in Singapore, he's Vietnamese and by hazard he's from Hanoi. They brought us to a bar by motorbike. After being slaloming between all these motorbikes all day on Wednesday I was finally on one of them. It was great feeling slaloming, stopping at a red light and being surrounded by dozens of motorbikes and finally arriving at a very nice place in the south of Hanoi. We had a very nice dinner, I enjoyed the Vietnamese beer and discovered some new Vietnamese... [Lire la suite]

Ha Long Bay

I think I won't say that much about Ha Long Bay. We booked a three-days tour in a travel agency in Hang Bac street for 40USD/pers (food, transportation, guide, visiting fees, first night on a junk, second night in a 3-stars Hotel on Cat BA Island, kayaking, trekking were all included). So we've done all of this. The only annoying part was the transport from Hanoi to Ha Long City where we took the junk and then it was just terrific. The tiphoon was completely gone and we had blue sky during the whole trip. Visiting the grottoes was... [Lire la suite]

Staying up all night

Before leaving Singapore for Vietnam we decided that once there our challenge would be to to spend less money as possible, simply doing a "guide du crevard". So far we were doing well: hard seats to avoid paying a room for Sunday's night, hard beds for the same reason on Tuesday's night. That's why we decided "for fun" to stay up all night on Wednesday. Firstly, we went to a restaurant an ordered drinks instead of ordering food directly. We had been talking for an hour when the waiter finally decided to come and... [Lire la suite]

Perfume Pagoda

We arrived in Hanoi around 4am on Wednesday morning and decided to walk from the train station to Hang Bac street. This street is simply famous for all its travel agencies, cafes and hotels that are organizing trips all around Hanoi. This was our first real day in Hanoi and the first impression we had was it's a very quiet city, nobody was walking in the streets, the only person we met were people asking if we want to go somewhere in motorbikes :"Where do you wanna go? moto - cheap.." and after telling them we didn't need... Second day

After such a start in Vietnam we were wondering if we could do better on Tuesday. Our plan was to rent motorbikes and to hang around Sapa on our own. However when we woke up it was raining and the problem was it wasn't stopping. We decided to do it anyway.   We got one motorbike each for 5USD per motorbike, bought some plastic coat (40,000d) which look liked  a plastic bag and went to Thac Bac (silver warterfalls in Vietnamese). It was fun, riding on a so-called road which was most of the time covered with mud and... [Lire la suite]

We arrived at Loa Cai’s train station around 5am, took a bus to Sapa for 25,000d and arrived in Sapa 1hour later. Once again our Southeast Asia Lonely Planet was usefull: we were looking for a place to stay and one of the hotel was described as having a gorgeous view of the Valley. We went there (Cat Cat hotel) and the view was effectively very impressive. Our room had a complete view of the valley and the village. It was quite correct for 8USD a night: two beds, hot shower, mosquitoes net, and A FIREPLACE.   ... [Lire la suite]

Going to Sapa

We decided to go to Sapa on Sunday's night, just after landing. We had to go downtown (the airport is 30kms away from Hanoi) and things started well... We took a cab that told us that he'll run the meter because it would make the fare cheaper than paying the usual fare (150,000d) from the aiport. The problem was after half of the way the fare was already more expensive than 150,000d...So we told him that we won't pay more, and after arguing 5minutes we decided to get off the cab. It was fun to do the "French tourists" very... [Lire la suite]

By the way...

I'd like to describe what we had for lunch on Sunday in Hanoi before going back to study.  We went to a restaurant where we had to sit on mats (the table was not more than 50cm high, simply imagine a traditionnal Japanese restaurant even thought it wasn't one). We were 7: Thomas, me, Dat's brother, and Dat's friends. We started by having common Vietnamese food: veggies, french fries which are very common allover Asia, and other things I don't remember. So far nothing special every thing was ok, even using shopsticks.... [Lire la suite]

back from Vietnam

I came back from Vietnam this morning around 1am. What I can tell you is that it's quite depressing to go to school and study after such a week. We've done (Thomas and me) everything at the very last minute like booking our train ticket to Sapa in Hanoi's railway station less than one hour before train's departure and not more than 1 hour and half after landing in Vietnam. We've been visiting rice fields in Sapa, enjoying the Perfume Pagoda (80 km away from Hanoi), admiring Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba island during three days, and finally... [Lire la suite]

Vietnam preparations..

I'm leaving to Hanoi on Sunday noon with Thomas and so far the only thing we got for sure is our plane tickets. We haven't booked any accommodations for Sunday night and I think we won't do it. We've planned to do a week in Vietnam (Sunday to Sunday) as complete Backpackers, bargaining for everything and trying to get the cheapest thing everytime even if it means sleeping in a train.. I should say that we are actually planning to write an authentic "guide du crevard au Vietnam" because we found a way to do not pay any... [Lire la suite]
